Black woodpecker

Rare woodpecker seen in Essex?

In Wildlife by admin

Reports are coming in of a possible black woodpecker sighting in Maldon.

A source in the Goldhanger area said she saw "a black woodpecker in the garden, more brownish than black, with a small amount of red on the top of the head".

Details were reported on the Essex Field Club Facebook page.

Black woodpeckers sightings are extremely rare in the UK, with no official records of the bird having ever made it to these shore. They are common in France and Germany. Much larger than the UK's native woodpeckers, they're about the size of a crow.

Although people sometimes mistake juvenile greater spotted woodpeckers, the woman said the Goldhanger bird was about the size of a green woodpecker.

Youtube video below shows what black woodpeckers look like, although it's difficult here to appreciate just how big they really are.
